Happy Father’s Day, to my Papi

June 16, 2012 § 3 Comments

Father's Day tie for a chihuahua's daddyTo the guy who:
Keeps my belly scratches going until mom gets home.

Sneaks me tidbits when he is carving that yummilicious rotisserie chicken.

Lifts me up onto the couch (and eventually his lap) when I give him that pitiful look and no one is watching.

Puts up with me walking all over the bed (and him) in the middle of the night looking for a warm and cozy spot to snuggle into.

I tried to find the perfect gift for the perfect Daddy. I dragged Mama out, far and wide. You know how picky I can be. But alas, nothing seemed to capture just how I feel about you. Nothing would do.

So I enlisted Mama’s help to make you something truly ESPECIAL for you. I picked your (OK one of my favorite) colors. I packed a lot of love into every stitch and bedazzle. Mucho bling for my Papi!

I hope you like it. Now you can be a real knight in “shinning” armor for all to see. And I hope you know how much I love you.

Muchos kisses,

Your little Chica

Feliz New Year, Amigos!!

December 31, 2011 § 1 Comment

Happy New Year, my dear amigos. It has been a great year of change at Casa Chanel: Kids are both off to college; Empty nest adjustments with cleaning out, furniture rearrangements and simplifying things for us all; Mama and her partner, Aunt Tracey, started a new company that is sure to skyrocket in the coming year and impact lots of kids; Dad got new glasses with progressive-lenses so we are all staying out from underfoot (his foot!) at least; and we got some gizmo called a “blueray” (does that go well with tortillas?) that gets “wifi” (that sounds like it tickles) so the peeps are enjoying more movies at home and quality time together (with extra lap time for la Chica. Viva el blueray!)

Here’s hoping 2012 is a year full of hope, love and happiness for all of you. And to get us started on the right paw, I will make some resolutions/predictions:

  1. More walks and exercise better be in my future (ahem … oh, Mama!!!!!!) The Chica’s waistline will not improve on good intentions and baby carrots alone.
  2. More “public appearances” for the Chica. My fans here in the neighborhood are under control (scary grrrrrrrs, I’m watching you!) and I’m ready for fame and fortune. Maybe we’ll make it to Bark World this year! WooHoo!!
  3. More giving back. No, I don’t mean the obvious! I mean getting involved and helping those in need. I’ll be looking for some causes. Suggestions are welcome, amigos.
  4. More blog posts from la Chica (ahem … oh, Mama!!!!!!) We all understood the “dark period” while Mama was muy busy working on her book and educational products, but the world also needs a steady dose of Chihuahua Wisdom to continue to evolve.

And now for a nice siesta, err, I mean, some deep reflection čśë

Mucho love and keeeeesses to my familia and amigos. And Cin-Cin!!

A Christmas flea visits the Chihuahua

December 23, 2011 § Leave a comment

I don’t remember putting this on my Christmas list but it appears I’ve gotten a little early “present” for the holiday. Apparently the unseasonably warn weather here in Florida has inspired some fresh flea to hitch a ride on la Chica. Guess it read the blog and was trying to crash the party at Casa Chanel. And who can blame the opportunistic flea when mama is making the Noche Buena feast – Cuban pork, rice and frijoles negros, platanos maduros and a great big loaf of fluffy Cuban bread!! And our Christmas tree is smelling good and looking all shiny and sparkly. And our peeps are almost all home for the big Holiday!

But, ay Caramba, Amigos! The scratchies are not muy nice. This pulga is driving me crazy, and I in turn am keeping my peeps awake at night. It is a fast little bugger traveling rapido all over my back, making me twist and turn like a pretzel trying to bite it off. This princesa is NOT used to this impertinent intrusion and the undignified scratching behavior won’t do when it is time to put on my Christmas fine threads! As you can all imagine, it has been a little tough this week:

So on the 5th Day of Christmas my true loving Mama gave to meeeeeeee

… a warm bath in doggy oatmeal shampooooooo …

On the 4th day of Christmas my true loving familia gave to meeeeeeee

… a big smile when we thought the bug was goneeeeee …

On the 3rd day of Christmas la Chica gave to themmmmmmm

… another sleepless night when the pulga came backkkkkkk …

Now on the 2nd day of Christmas my true loving Mama will give to meeeeeeee

… another dunk (with essential oils added) and a “Better NOT see you later Se├▒or fleaaaaaaaaaa!!!”

On the last day of Christmas my Girl will be saying to meeeeeeee

… “I’m home!!” to scratch your belly so there better be no fleaaaaaaaaaaaa!

So Rudolph, this year YOU better watch out. Since Se├▒or Flea is getting his final eviction notice today, I’m leaving a little something for you to take back to the North Pole – a hitch hiking flea who messed with the wrong chica!

All pooped out from a sleepless night of scratching

A Chihuahua letter to Santa

And I with my blue blur, my puppy toy and chew Santa, had just settled down for a mid morning nap ...

Dear Se├▒or Santa,

I have been sooooooo good this year! Surely there will be a nice present under our Christmas tree for moi this year. I understand those are the requirements čśë So to recap my many good deeds,  I can assure you that La Chica:

  • has been very supportive of her Mama this year as she has had to adjust to the empty nest. This is a 24-7 position, with arduous hours of extra cuteness required to cheer her spirits.
  • has been working diligently at her neighborhood watching post. I’ve got the squirrels, lizards and any canine taller than 8 inches answering to my mighty barks. La Chica is the muy big sherif in this barrio, keeping things in order.
  • has not chewed anyone’s shoes. God forbid! As tempting as they smell sometimes, Mama would kill me if I approached any collectibles in her “shoe museum.” I not so crazy!
  • has stayed out of garbage cans, pantries and the kitty litter (yuck! who’d go there anyway!!) as Mama directed. And though I may have committed a few tiny infractions by pilfering from the laundry basket, these were minor lapses for which I repented and begged much forgiveness. I’m out of the dog house.
  • might have missed the “potty” pad on occasion. But I was really “close!” I just can’t gauge well back there and my aim is a little off. My intentions WERE good!

All in all, I’ve been the model Chihuahua citizen in this barrio. And I should be up there, topmost in the “good” column of your Christmas list. Soooooo čśë if you are wondering what to bring the Chica for Christmas this year, I have a couple of suggestions that would make my little corazon muy happy:

  • I could use a pretty new blanky. Mine’s beginning to show my age čśë
  • I would not mind a GIGANTIC box of Cherrios and a big bag of what I’ll admit is my new favorite healthy alternative treat: baby carrots. Nice and cold from the refrigerator!
  • But rather than any bling (truth is I shine all on my own) or new toys (I could never part with my ole faithful, Blue Blurrrrr anyway), I’d like to wish for good homes for all my amigos who are running around out there in the cold without a familia of their own, hungry and in danger of getting hurt.  We just can’t have that on this night of joy and love.
Love, keeeess-keeeess and hugs,
La Chica

P.S. Please disregard any obviously fabricated evidence against my impeccable record. El nasty, devious Cato is always trying to get me in trouble. He is muy malo! I think he needs some coal, preferably lumps, dropped on his head!

Happy Birthday, America!

Dear Amigos,

Here’s hoping most of you are out enjoying a wonderful 4th of July┬áwith family and friends!

May your grills be grillin’,

May your dear ones be hanging out together and chillin’,

And may your skies be clear and brilliant with marvelous fireworks, so thrillin’!

Happy Cuatro (fourth) of July!

July 1, 2011 § 9 Comments

My familia is muy proud to be celebrating this Quatro here in our adoptive country. Mama is first generation Cuban-American, and I’d guess I’m about 20th generation Chica American (who can keep track of my family tree?!?!)

But on this ultimate American holiday weekend, as we remember the some of the great leaders that helped make ours the best nation in the world, let us not forget the little guys that lent a helping paw in the effort. Let us remember that many of our founding fathers and illustrious presidents had great companions that served them faithfully as confidants and advisors. And no, I’m not talking about their first ladies!!

As shown on the PoodleAndDogBlog.typepad.com

Washington had Taster, Tipler, Forester, Vulcan, Madame Moose, Searcher and Sweet Lips. Jefferson had his Buzzy. Lincoln had his Fido and Roosevelt had Pete, Skip, Jack and Peter among many. And I’m just getting started with that long list of admirable quadrupeds. The AKC and DogNames.org, and Wikipedia have cool lists of presidential pets, sure to make you proud. Oh, and ahem, please note that there were not too many catos in the WH inner circle ;p I’m just saying …

So during this celebration of our great country’s birth, I propose we do a little “updating” of some of America’s monuments to reflect our appreciation of these quiet, lesser-known servants of liberty. No disrespect intended, but I’ve taken the initiative (liberty) of putting together some sketches below. Keep in mind these suggestions are merely meant to be symbolic of all great dogs. After all, I cannot take credit for all that makes our fabulous country rock! But I do believe a Chihuahua would be an excellent emblem of fierce loyalty and bravery.

Picture La Chica, as an American treasure

Imagine La Chica, as an American monument

Admire La Chica, as a beacon of freedom

Happy Cuatro of July, Amigos! Let us appreciate how fortunate we are as we celebrate this great nation and the freedoms it stands for. Let’s live it up … now pass the ketchup!!
