Happy Father’s Day, to my Papi

June 16, 2012 § 3 Comments

Father's Day tie for a chihuahua's daddyTo the guy who:
Keeps my belly scratches going until mom gets home.

Sneaks me tidbits when he is carving that yummilicious rotisserie chicken.

Lifts me up onto the couch (and eventually his lap) when I give him that pitiful look and no one is watching.

Puts up with me walking all over the bed (and him) in the middle of the night looking for a warm and cozy spot to snuggle into.

I tried to find the perfect gift for the perfect Daddy. I dragged Mama out, far and wide. You know how picky I can be. But alas, nothing seemed to capture just how I feel about you. Nothing would do.

So I enlisted Mama’s help to make you something truly ESPECIAL for you. I picked your (OK one of my favorite) colors. I packed a lot of love into every stitch and bedazzle. Mucho bling for my Papi!

I hope you like it. Now you can be a real knight in “shinning” armor for all to see. And I hope you know how much I love you.

Muchos kisses,

Your little Chica

Chanel the chuhuahua is full of chihuahua wisdomI have found love: Spartacus Brownie Von Lickety Jones Jr.

OK, so I have been in love before. I am admittedly a little A.D.D. And to complicate matters I am a diva princess and just entitled to mood swings. It is in the fine print. But seriously, Señor Spartacus has captured my heart with his poetic letter to his Mama. From the very start, I knew we were kindred spirits. Read for yourselves:

“Dear Mom,

You think it’s easy dozing most of the day, begging for biscuits, nipping at your heels, and barking at squirrels?

Okay, it is …”

The simple joy in his expressions. The careless tone of his truths. The fluidly woven tale, leading his Mama and the reader right to the point: GET IT, WANT IT NOW!!  Need I say more? Well, whether or not I need to, I will. Simply to point out to all my chicos and one specific Mama that we must look into this recommendation of his on the dailycandy.com:

Buddha Dog’s Canine Masseuse Shows Us the Proper Technique

Ahh … the kneading … the skin rolling … stretching my little legs … in between my toes … just so, behind and to the tips of my bat ears … ahhhhhhhhhhhh ….

Dog Massage video clip on DailyCandy.com

OMG, la Chica is melting at the thought. Mama, get busy learning these techniques. If I can’t get to Cali anytime soon, I WANT THIS ANYWAY. Apparently these are also good for the human doing the dog massaging. Not that it would be a requirement, but I am into bonuses 😉 and I’m always looking out for your well-being.

And as for you, my Romeo-Sparticus, ‘Til we meet someday …”

And to all, a good Christmas siesta

I know everyone is busy today enjoying this special time with their family – laughing, catching up, sharing stories and remembering Christmases past. This year Mama announced that we would have Christmas for two whole days! She wants to make up some special time with the kids home from college. So here at Casa Chanel we’ve been enjoying the parade, Christmas movies, playing with our gifts and lots of yummy food all in our nice comfy pajamas. Now this is what I call a perfect time with my peeps.

I don’t want to keep you long, amigos. But by now you have probably figured that the Chica is nuts about Christmas so I just had to get one last Christmas wish in for all my amigos:

Here’s my little prayer that this beautiful feeling we are all sharing today stays with you in your heart all year long! Feliz Navidad!!

The Chihuahua that almost ate Christmas

December 21, 2011 § 5 Comments

I just love all the excitement around the house at Christmas time. Mom, Dad and the kids go around decorating everything with pretty and sparkly things. The humans even bring a tree inside at my Casa! I say every dog needs their own tree — to chase squirrels up to (or maybe pesky catos, heh, heh); to rest by at the end of a good day’s labor (napping, er, I mean guarding the Casa all day); and, oooooooh, to explore the marvelous smells of nature! Every sniff is a new mystery that the Chica must investigate!

And the familia always has a great time setting the tree up. The kids each have special ornaments that they always put on the tree. Mama made the angel back when she and Dad first celebrated Christmas together. And Dad always reminds the Cato and I that we are not “allowed” to nap on the velvety tree skirt (sure, sure 😉 )

Christmas at Casa Chanel

Ah, these traditions always bring fond memories of Christmases past, in particular, my very first Christmas …

You see, there is this little lamb that came with the Nativity scene that Mama carefully puts out every year underneath the Christmas tree. I didn’t know it then, but it is the first Nativity scene she bought when she moved away from home. And well, though it is a little plastic lamb, it looked delectable to me then. Still does. So when all the peeps were looking the other way, I made my lightning-speed, precision attack and snatched that puppy up. I should have known better, but I was young and impulsive in those days. And I hadn’t learned just how much these precious traditions mean to my peeps.

I slunk off in my finest stealth mode and stole away to my blanket, salivating at the thought of hours of good chewing I’d get out of my prize catch. Chew, chew, chew. Lick, lick, lick. Gag, gag (just a little to cleat the throat) and REPEAT.

The Christmas music was playing, the televised footage of the roaring fireplace was “warming” the scene (we were still enjoying flip-flops weather, but the ambiance we had created was winter wonderland cozy.) Everyone was talking, laughing and reveling in the Christmas spirit and I was throughly enjoying my “Christmas” snack. When Mama suddenly got the notion of taking pictures to capture the tender moment. I must admit I was a little distracted. I was still young and had not developed my full efficient canine guard machine skills. So I didn’t notice that she was looking for me to be in the picture too.

Gnaw… gnaw … lick, lick … chomp, chomp … then WHOOOPS, I suddenly sensed something wasn’t quite right! I looked up to find Mama STARING down at me, hands on her hips, chancleta-clad foot tapping furiously, and brown eyes blazing some serious Cuban disapproval. Stopping at mid chomp, I extricated the little lamb (which no longer looked particularly sweet and tender) from my mouth. Ay, caramba, I knew I was in mucho trouble! I tried my best to moisten my eyeballs for an emergency puppy/bambi-eyed look, pleading forgiveness. It is a self-preservation mechanism, you know. But there was no denying the facts, I had been caught in the act and enjoying it just a little too mucho. My only hope was to appear as contrite as a Chihuahua could be. We actually get a lot of practice at this art because, well, a Chihuahua will be a Chihuahua — low to the ground scroungers to the last!

And then as Mama bent over to snatch the lamb away and who knows what else, I squeezed my eyes tightly shut and concentrated on beaming a telepathic plea, “But Mama, Baby Jesus would not mind. He always forgives the Chica for her little trespasses.” I cringed, prepared for many of her more colorful Spanish words, spoken in that particular Cuban “volume and speed” that adjusts as her temper rises.  But then, somehow it WORKED!!!!! She sighed, patted my head and laughed as she carried what was left of the lamb away, shaking her head.

Mama's little lamb ... or what is left of it

That was the day that this Chica learned that Love IS the true meaning of Christmas. And I had not ruined the happy day. La Chica and the spirit of Christmas were here to stay.

Ever since I only get to see my little lamb from afar at Christmas time. Mama still puts out the same Nativity set, but my lamb stays up on the bookshelf. Ahhh … so close and yet so far. Its back left leg sticks out a little, in mangled fashion. Still, it reminds me of that first Christmas of my youth, the first with my awesome human family, and brings a sweet carol to my heart …

A Chihuahua letter to Santa

And I with my blue blur, my puppy toy and chew Santa, had just settled down for a mid morning nap ...

Dear Señor Santa,

I have been sooooooo good this year! Surely there will be a nice present under our Christmas tree for moi this year. I understand those are the requirements 😉 So to recap my many good deeds,  I can assure you that La Chica:

  • has been very supportive of her Mama this year as she has had to adjust to the empty nest. This is a 24-7 position, with arduous hours of extra cuteness required to cheer her spirits.
  • has been working diligently at her neighborhood watching post. I’ve got the squirrels, lizards and any canine taller than 8 inches answering to my mighty barks. La Chica is the muy big sherif in this barrio, keeping things in order.
  • has not chewed anyone’s shoes. God forbid! As tempting as they smell sometimes, Mama would kill me if I approached any collectibles in her “shoe museum.” I not so crazy!
  • has stayed out of garbage cans, pantries and the kitty litter (yuck! who’d go there anyway!!) as Mama directed. And though I may have committed a few tiny infractions by pilfering from the laundry basket, these were minor lapses for which I repented and begged much forgiveness. I’m out of the dog house.
  • might have missed the “potty” pad on occasion. But I was really “close!” I just can’t gauge well back there and my aim is a little off. My intentions WERE good!

All in all, I’ve been the model Chihuahua citizen in this barrio. And I should be up there, topmost in the “good” column of your Christmas list. Soooooo 😉 if you are wondering what to bring the Chica for Christmas this year, I have a couple of suggestions that would make my little corazon muy happy:

  • I could use a pretty new blanky. Mine’s beginning to show my age 😉
  • I would not mind a GIGANTIC box of Cherrios and a big bag of what I’ll admit is my new favorite healthy alternative treat: baby carrots. Nice and cold from the refrigerator!
  • But rather than any bling (truth is I shine all on my own) or new toys (I could never part with my ole faithful, Blue Blurrrrr anyway), I’d like to wish for good homes for all my amigos who are running around out there in the cold without a familia of their own, hungry and in danger of getting hurt.  We just can’t have that on this night of joy and love.
Love, keeeess-keeeess and hugs,
La Chica

P.S. Please disregard any obviously fabricated evidence against my impeccable record. El nasty, devious Cato is always trying to get me in trouble. He is muy malo! I think he needs some coal, preferably lumps, dropped on his head!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas … cha cha cha …

No the empty nest is not back to full happy status, but the Christmas decorations have been going up, and I hear a lot of my favorite names mentioned in conversation! And as of last night, OUR BOY (squeals with delight!) is home from college. Mama says he gets a nice long break from school — a whole month, I hear. Not that I have any particular notion of what a “month” means in human terms. All I know is that when my peeps “GO” somewhere — whether it is the kids going away to college, or Mama with her “I’m just going to work. Be right back!” — it seems like forever in this dog’s years!

Happiness is ...

So I get more than a little excited when they come home. There are mucho Chihuahua screamings, wiggles, fainting spells, convulsive rollovers, cucaracha kicks in the air and berzerk dashings through the house. La Chica can put on quite a show! All of course, with class and style 😉 And Mama gets a big kick of how wacky I get when the kids come home. Here is one of my finest meltdowns, captured by Mama. I don’t need to ask Santa for anything special this Christmas. My presents are coming home on their own! All I want for Christmaaaaaaaassss … is youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

Let the bellyrubs begin! Ho, ho, ho!!

Where Am I?
