Review: Eukanuba specialty food for Chihuahuas

November 29, 2011 § Leave a comment

Chanel the chuhuahua is full of chihuahua wisdomAs this Chihuahua’s owner/mom, I’ve always been pretty steady with the dog food I choose to give Chanel. All reported tidbit and snacks aside, we take great care of our tiny dog’s digestive well-being. It is a sad day around here when on occasion, our intrepid chica gets into something she should not eat and mopes around with a sore tummy. Breaks your heart.

Recently we were offered the opportunity to try out Eukanuba’s new Chihuahua Formula, and since Chanel has done well on Eukanuba since she was a puppy, we did not hesitate to test the new food.

The dry food packaging falls right in line with their well-recognized brand, showcasing an expressive Chihuahua. In my opinion, these dogs are seldom short on personality so they couldn’t go wrong there. And the sturdy package is easy enough to open.

But more importantly, the formula has been designed with specific issues that tend to affect this breed – joint problems, weight control and  sensitive digestive systems. As an owner of a Chihuahua, I can say these mini canines have no concept of their size and often defy their limitations without hesitation. They have great heart, if not such great strength, so finding a dog food that specifically supports their bones and joints is a must.

From the Eukanuba website, the ingredients list guarantees no fillers, and I like to know that the ingredient list is simple and focused on her health. Chicken and added sources of vitamins are the main components.

In the end, Chanel gave her new Eukanuba Chihuahua Formula the best testament herself. I know she is happy with her meal when she gets a little wacky and plays one of her favorite games with her food – the “toss and fetch the ‘treat’ ” game – showing she was excited and approved of the new fare.

I may be on a diet, but I’m gobbling up the love this Thanksgiving!

I might concede that my waistline is NOT what it used to be. And yes, I’ll even take my vet’s advise and incorporate “mature” (because “senior” is NOT in my vocabulary) dog food and extra walks into my lifestyle. But having both of my kids home from college for Thanksgiving this week, I’m definitely going to blow my cuddle calorie count. And so it begins …

Yesterday, my girl arrived from K.C. and I had a total melt down!! Mama and Pops have been trying to prepare me. They kept mentioning her name in their conversations: “Blah, blah, blah, blah, Danielle. Blah Danielle blah blah blah. Blah blah Dani. Blah blah blah …” You know how the humans can talk. And trust me, the Chica did not miss a beat! Every time I heard her name I looked up, used my high-tech scanners to survey the premises and did a snifer dog reconnaissance to see if I detected any arrivals at casa Chanel. But unfortunately, there was nada. Just a lot of talk. And so it was for the past couple of weeks.

So it DID sneak up on me when she materialized right before my eyes yesterday! Mama left with her usual “Mama’s got to go to work. Be right back” which I don’t ever buy, even for a minute. So I settled for my nap, ahem, I mean my trusty guard shift on the back of the couch when … BAM!! She walked back in 30 minutes later with … my girl. There was LOTS of screaming, on all out parts. And LOTS of wiggling and squirming and rolling over almost fainting with excitement, on my part  🙂  “Oh, happy days .. are here agaiiiiiiin … oh, tra-la-la … and cha-cha-cha!!”  I was so giddy last night I could not decide which bed to sleep on. So it was musical beds most of the night for me, and not much sleep most of the night for Mama.

She is real, and she is here, and she is delicious and I am going to eat her up with my special Chihuahua kisses.

And now I’m hearing a whole lotta “Ryan” talk too!!! Be still my corazon!! I just KNOW he’ll be here soon. My bestest belly-rubber too!! I am going to explode :•-) with puppy happiness. My tail will surely wag right off my butt!

So what if I’m OK with not partaking of too much of the turkey nibblets per Dr. B’s orders. You can all have it. La Chica CAN live on love alone (and a few carrot sticks.)

Happy Thanksgiving, Amigos!! Love your loved ones and let’s be grateful for all the blessings in our lives.

Like Papi, like daughter

My Blue Blurrrrrr

For those who can’t understand my love (OK, make that OBSESSION) with my favorite toy, I can only say it is a complicated relationship.

I love him, even though I can’t stop gnashing my teeth at him or stop the urge to pound him.

But truly I can’t live without him, and I cry woefully if my chico falls and slips under the couch. Just ask Mama. I make her move all the furniture to rescue him from the dust bunnies.

Yet, I live to tear at him and his crazy blue hairs and bite him with mucho gusto.

He is my sidekick, even while he is also La Super Chica’s ultimate Nemesis, the Blue Blur.

So how can I explain this love-hate relationship? Well, I could just say that it is a chica’s prerogative to be fickle. But the truth is it seems to be in the gene poolz. Proof? Meet my Papi’s Flea:

Papi's bestest friend, Señor Flea

My handsome Papi

It is very much the same for them. Papi brings Señor Flea over to visitors and begs them to play with him. Then he growls and tears him up. He loves to play tug-of-war with the hairy beastie. Throws it up in the air, catches it in his powerful fearsome jaws and shakes the stuffing out of it. Papi even tries to drown Señor Flea in the pool. Mama says she had to fish it out of the pool filter, all soggy and full of water bugs, the last time she was visiting. But if ANYONE tries to mess with Papi’s Señor Flea, WATCH OUT for the ferocious defender my mighty Papi will turn into!

So yes, in this familia we make inseparable if unlikely amigos. Magnifico duos! We are passionate chihuahuas, slaves to the inexplicable attraction to opposites. For me, I can’t help myself, and besides, I don’t want to. Banzaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, chicos!!!

La Chihuahua, a little chubby? I beg to differ!

Perfection, I tell you!

So I went to the Vet today and left in a big huff. Hard to believe, I know, from such an easy-going Chica like me. But let me tell you what happened and YOU be the judge.

I was due for my yearly check up and vaccinations, so Mama bundled me up and off we went to the Vet’s office. Never my favorite, but I was determined to get through it with dignity. Don’t get me wrong. Dr. B is a pretty nice guy, but all the poking and prodding that comes with the territory makes the chica muy cranky.

But I was wearing my best collar, pink and shiny. And Mama had just given me a bath a couple of days ago so I was fresh and fluffy. With the natural gleam in my eyes, I was the perfect specimen of the greatest dog breed on the planet, the Chihuahua.

When suddenly, I hear them talking over my head and Dr. B. starts to insinuate that I am a little bit “chunky.” QUE?!?!?! I protested. I am NOT chubby, Señor! I am a healthy, curvalicious latina chica!

Then the doctor started giving Mama some mumbo jumbo information about how giving pets treats is a psychological farce. He said humans tell themselves they do it out of guilt because they are eating and feel they must share. Others feel their pets are like their children and they like to spoil them, just a little. Some simply think that treats make their pets happy (I like those people). But Dr. B and some fancy-schmancy psychologist he heard speak at a conference believe that it is nothing but instant gratification … for the HUMAN!!!! That there is no bonding or reinforcement benefit to the pet!

So, wait. First he calls me fat and THEN he tells my Mama that giving me treats is actually hurting me?!?! How DARE he mess around with my precious bits of turkey from Dad’s sandwiches; or with my tender morsels of chicken and my fluffy tidbits of rice when Mama is making dinner. Or the Taco Night cheeeeeeeese?!?!?! Are you crrrrrazzzzzy, chico?

He may have the medical degree, but he eeeeez not muy smart. I can guarantee that you can get a lot more ahem cooperation from this chica with the proper incentive!

So Mama, I am game for the extra walks and exercise. We can all use those. But don’t you forget, every little bit of me IS full of goodness for you to love. So pack my baby carrot sticks, Chica!!

My Chihuahua Papi eeeez muy handsome!

November 15, 2011 § 2 Comments

My Papi, el handsome Señor Coco who is also destined for stardom, recently made an appearance in South Florida and was immediately spotted in the crowd and invited to model at an event. He didn’t even have to bat those pretty eyes of his. He eeeeeez just that irrrrrrresistible! It is in the gene poolz, you know 😉

So you are surely asking yourselves, “and where was the Chica then?” Well, this all happened during Mama’s last escapade to Boca Raton and Jupiter. Yes, chicos I was left behind (again!!!) while the humans went to visit our boy at college. MY boy!!! My favorite belly scratcher who is so far away and whom I miss so mucho. GRRRRRRrrrrrrrr

Anyhow, Papi tells me that the humans were having themselves a grand ole time down there — college football game, breakfast at a lovely little french bistro, shopping with the college boy.  Hrmph! Then on the last day, they decided to go to lunch at the chic Palm Beach City Place only to run into a street fair … for puppies! SEEeeee, they should have taken me along.

Anyhow, they found a cafe with sidewalk seating and settled down to dog/people watch, ooooh’ing and ahhhh’ing over the cute critters parading in their finest. My handsome Papi was on his best behavior at the cafe (that part is apparently not in the gene poolz because I am a muy excitable Chica!) when one of the event coordinators approached the table and asked if Papi would participate in the fashion show that afternoon. In his muy demure manner he consented and his human fans, new and old, were treated to an unforgettable show of elegance and finesse. Hello, Hollywood?!?!?!

I stole Mama’s phone and found some snapshots. Enjoy:

I know, I know. I’m just delicious 🙂

Muy yummy Chica

Aren’t you glad I’m back in your lives? I missed you too. Not being able to stay in touch on this blog was torture for all of us, wasn’t it. But I AM back in charge now. So no more problema, chicos.

Now since I’ve been away for a while, I would like to review why La Chica (that eeeeeeez me) is muy special and recommended for your heart health:

  • I’m cute. Not up for discussion.
  • I am compact and easy to take everywhere. Have smart phone? I come weeeeth you!
  • I am high maintenance, but well worth it.
  • I am muy wise and have no problem dispensing my priceless advise.
  • I do get into some messes, but due to my size, they don’t amount to muy mucho.
  • If I do make trouble, I just turn on these big brown eyes and … “poof,” all is forgotten.
  • I’m sure to brighten your buenos dias.

For my part, I subscribe to the “good things come in small packages” philosophy. It makes my world go ’round. My zen zinging. Wouldn’t you agree?

So smile muy preeeetty and have a great Chihuahua day! Keeeeesses 😉

* * * * *

PS: I have not forgotten about the Chihuahua Photo Fiesta we started before my little disappearance act. (And we know who to send all the complaints about that to, don’t we 😉 )

I’ve put the ole thinkin’ sombrero on my precious little noggin’, and I’m figuring out how to liven up that party just a leeeettle bit so we can all have some fun. Updates to come soon. But first we’ll picante things up again at Casa ChihuahuaWisdom. OK, Chicos?

This Chihuahua is taking back over

Ay amigos, my Mama has lost her marbles. I guess it was to be expected. After all we’re not getting any younger, and the empty nest adjustment has been (and still is) taking its toll. It is all more than the poor dear can take.

Of course, it did not help that she also picked THIS moment to launch a new product line for her She’s been working so hard that her mind is now definitely scrambled and I’m not sure I will ever be able to fix that arroz con pollo.

In the meantime, La Chica and her friends and adoring fans have been neglected. Our twice-a-week “chats” have fallen by the wayside. No doubt you’ve noticed. Still, I thought, “well, she is not dangerous and she does seems to be having some fun, the poor dear.”

So I sat loyally by her side, supportive and true to the last, one stoic, soulful doggie sigh after the next.

Until …

SHE went TOOOOOOO far!!

She absent-mindedly left the box of Cheerios (MY box of Cheerios) on the floor. And naturally, my despicable (and equally frustrated brother) El Cato pounced on the opportunity. He thought he’d GRAB her attention by starting a commotion. Judge for yourselves:

The Cato menace!!

That Menace!!!

Do we need any more evidence of the deplorable living conditions I am suffering through?!?!?!

  • Forgotten
  • Abandoned
  • Deprived
  • Lonely
  • And now THIS?!?!

Pure meanie face

Not to mention (again) how she has neglected her ORIGINAL enterprise – MOI!! This blog was going to take me places! I barely get a decent walk these days.  This platform was going to make me a star!! Earn me the lifestyle I’d like to become accustomed to.

Call 9-1-Uno, Chicos! We need an intervention. Pronto!!

Wooooof! I don't theeeeek ssssso!

Where Am I?
