La Chica and the empty nesters, part 2

July 30, 2011 § 5 Comments

Sigh … I guess there is no way around it. We’ll soon be left behind as both of the kids go off to college. I tried to take one of those GED thingys which I found out on the internet might get you into this “college” place. But I had no idea what an isosceles triangle was. And who the heck is this Señor Shakespeare? What is up with that?! But did they ask me about Cosmo? The latest in Haute couture? Did they ask where Harry Potter found the last horcruxes? Nooooo.

And now that both our kids are off to college this fall, people say my human parents will be entering the “Mah and Pah” phase of their lives. Well, let me tell you, chicos, no one here is ready to drift quietly into the autumn of anything – not with a lively Chica like me in tha house.

I guess we’ll have to accept it – it will be different.  I must admit that I’ve already started to notice some changes in our routines around the casa. But I am determined to make the best of it. Hey, at least for me there will be plusses to being the center of attention. I think we’re going to be seeing a lot more of:

  • “TV dinners” – of course at our house that would be anything but Swansons. Mama and I are waaaaay too finicky and high maintenance for that. For us it will be the literally more dinners on the couch while watching TV –  which of course means crumbs and tender tidbits aplenty for la Chica. It will be a whole new adventure in cuisine procurement 🙂 I should write a book, don’t you think?
  • No more car pools, ballet classes or band practices =  more time and the need to fill that void with activity. Can you say Chihuahua massage therapy? Painting Chihuahua portraits? Gardening? Oooo, I’m going to love digging up the yummy carrots!!!!
  • There has already been a later-in-life fitness reality check. Mama and Dad are on the war path to health. Which works out to include more walks for the Chica, and therefore more yummy treats right after. I like, I like!!
  • Date nights, we’ll have to work out the acceptable terms there. I DO NOT believe that three is a crowd. ‘Nough said.
  • More interesting friends will likely be visiting. More Ooooos and Ahhhhhs at the cute, adorable Chica.
  • I suppose there will also be more recliner time and well-worn slippers = more lap and belly-scratchin’ time.

God knows I’ll miss the kids, but looking at it like this one thing is for sure. Come fall, I’ll be Mama and Daddy’s little princess full-time!

La Chihuahua and the empty nesters

Chanel the chihuahua just full of chihuahua wisdom

The way I see it.

Big things are afoot at mi casa. Mom and the kids have been going in and out a lot. The bags and boxes are piling up all around us. Remind me to file a complaint – Tigger has waaaaay too many new perches from which to pounce on me now. But seriously, I was worried for a while. I didn’t know what all of it meant. And you know the Chica has to be in the know!! I have a nervous disposition.

And the big humans started talking about an “empty nest.” What is that? I like our nest because it is NOT empty. It is just right!

Then, under cover of dark, el Cato and I started investigating (OK, so we were peeking and snooping) into these unopened packages. We started putting two and two together …

a “printer” (Strange contraptions, those. One can be casually walking past and Bam! They start to spit papers out.) …

a small TV (But we already have one, don’t we?) …

a microwave …

Oh, oh! I think we’ve figured it out! I suddenly remembered the first time this happened when our girl, the oldest, started collecting stuff for her new “place.” Not that there was anything wrong with her room right here at home. I love hanging out in there with her. Yet, it seemed like fun stuff at first – new obstacles to run around and climb over. Ha, ha, ha … WooHoo!! But then they took her off to college. The boxes went away and she was gone for soooooo long. No more fun 😦

So now you’re telling me that both of the kids are going to go off to college! Our boy, the best belly scratcher in the place, is going away too?!?!?!? No one asked ME for permission! Someone call the authorities! I definitely NO likey!

Hrmph … they have not heard the last of me on this!!!

WooHoo!! La Chihuahua has gotten a Versatile Blogger award

July 16, 2011 § 7 Comments

Thanks, NannyMcFur, for thinking of me! You made me smile (mucho tail wags!!) “Viva la Chica,” if I do say so myself.

Now according to the tradition of this award, I’m supposed to tell you 7 things about myself and my family. What? Only seven? 😉

So here goes:

1. My familia is very convoluted – both on the human and 4-legged side. My Mama’s sister started it all when she got Mami and Papi. A short gestational period later, and I and my 4 siblings came along 🙂 One of my sisters stayed with my parents, and I came to live here in St. Pete with my human family. Then came litter #2, and one of my sisters from that batch, went to live with my Mama’s Mama. Confused? Well, so am I most of the time.

2. Oh, yeah, I have three more adoptive siblings: Señor Cato, aka Tigger -He is veeeeeeery tricky and sneaky! But he eeeeez no match for me, La Super Chica!! And Panchita and Noel, they have glommed on despite the craziness of this familia.

3. And speaking of La Super Chica, that is my alter ego (but shhhhh … don’t tell just anyone. I must keep my identity a secret from the evil masterminds, minions and squirrels.) Look for more adventures in the near future! J.K. Rowling, give me a buzz 😉

4. My favorite snack is Cheerios. Though rice (and black beans, cha, cha, cha) and carrots are close runner-ups. Mom and I have a morning ritual – she flicks me Cheerios and I run all over the place “fetching” them – YUM!! What’s your favorite snack?

5. My favorite toy is the Blue Blurrrrr. I love to dig him up when Mom is sitting on the floor folding laundry. We have fun playing tug-a-war-and-fetch, though it does NOT help with the stacks of laundry.

6. I live in a lovely neighborhood in sunny St. Petersburg, Florida – squirrels, lizards, gators and all! And I, as you might suspect, am the self-appointed neighborhood patrol officer.

7. Oooo, what will this be?!? What makes the Chica’s heart tick? What is my fondest dream? Oh, yes, I seek fame. Unabashedly and avidly. Pass the word!

But enough shameless self-promotion. If you are here, you know I’m a diva and I’m quite proud of it. So now I must give a paws up to some of my favorite pet blogs:

  1. Starting with the NannyMcFur 😉
  2. Obsessive Chihuahua Disorder
  3. Famous Chihuahua
  4. Life with Dogs
  5. Dog Tipper
  6. CuteOverload
  7. Tucker Tells All
  8. Being Henri
  9. The World according to Lexi
  10. According to Gus
Only 15?!?!? I can’t do it! Ahhhh … How does one pick?!?! OK, I’m including some of my best pals who use facebook as a platform to bring joy to the world!

OK and one more because this is MY blog and I can 😉

Happy blogging, Amigos!!

***

Whoops! I should have been clearer. And I will message all my Chicos on the list to clarify: By “Paws Up” I mean I’m passing on and awarding THEM the Versatile Blogger Award! Congratulations, Amigos!!

Chihuahua pastimes while Mama is at work

July 9, 2011 § 2 Comments

Unfortunately, we have not reached that blissful state of financial independence just yet. So Mama does spend a lot of time at work. And I, left to my own devices, must fill many hours of my week in some fruitful pursuit while I wait for her to return. What do you do while your humans are out?

I like to:

  • nap in the sunny spot by the sliding glass doors (my beauty sleep is sacred)
  • keep an eye on the Cato so I can brief Mama on all his transgressions (or anything I can think to pin on him)
  • watch the lizards scoot across the lanai (it is mindless yet soothing)
  • unmake the bed (heh, heh 😉 I like to rearrange it just the way I like it)
  • use the laptop when Mama isn’t looking to look for Chihuahua News (I must keep up with my peeps!)

So here’s a great story I found today from Animal Planet’s Small Dogs, Big Jobs. It is about Buddy, the Chihuahua Ambassador. Just watch:

Buddy's story on Animal Planet

Yup, I’d say that was time well spent waiting for Mom. Have a great weekend, Chicos! Oh, and happy pet blog hopping!!

Happy Birthday, America!

Dear Amigos,

Here’s hoping most of you are out enjoying a wonderful 4th of July with family and friends!

May your grills be grillin’,

May your dear ones be hanging out together and chillin’,

And may your skies be clear and brilliant with marvelous fireworks, so thrillin’!

Happy Cuatro (fourth) of July!

July 1, 2011 § 9 Comments

My familia is muy proud to be celebrating this Quatro here in our adoptive country. Mama is first generation Cuban-American, and I’d guess I’m about 20th generation Chica American (who can keep track of my family tree?!?!)

But on this ultimate American holiday weekend, as we remember the some of the great leaders that helped make ours the best nation in the world, let us not forget the little guys that lent a helping paw in the effort. Let us remember that many of our founding fathers and illustrious presidents had great companions that served them faithfully as confidants and advisors. And no, I’m not talking about their first ladies!!

As shown on the PoodleAndDogBlog.typepad.com

Washington had Taster, Tipler, Forester, Vulcan, Madame Moose, Searcher and Sweet Lips. Jefferson had his Buzzy. Lincoln had his Fido and Roosevelt had Pete, Skip, Jack and Peter among many. And I’m just getting started with that long list of admirable quadrupeds. The AKC and DogNames.org, and Wikipedia have cool lists of presidential pets, sure to make you proud. Oh, and ahem, please note that there were not too many catos in the WH inner circle ;p I’m just saying …

So during this celebration of our great country’s birth, I propose we do a little “updating” of some of America’s monuments to reflect our appreciation of these quiet, lesser-known servants of liberty. No disrespect intended, but I’ve taken the initiative (liberty) of putting together some sketches below. Keep in mind these suggestions are merely meant to be symbolic of all great dogs. After all, I cannot take credit for all that makes our fabulous country rock! But I do believe a Chihuahua would be an excellent emblem of fierce loyalty and bravery.

Picture La Chica, as an American treasure

Imagine La Chica, as an American monument

Admire La Chica, as a beacon of freedom

Happy Cuatro of July, Amigos! Let us appreciate how fortunate we are as we celebrate this great nation and the freedoms it stands for. Let’s live it up … now pass the ketchup!!
